A New Type of Bungee Cord
Bungee cords are often used by many individuals to secure any assortment of cargo, from hiking and camping gear to coolers and furniture. But what precisely is a bungee cord? A bungee cord is a notably narrow segment of material made of one or more flexible strings that are often dressed in a braided cotton cover. The sheath cannot expand elastically, so it squeezes the core as it is stretched. It has been reported that bungee cords were originally employed in parachuting to aid in opening the old-style parachute container after the ripcord was pulled.
Because the standard bungees are enveloped in cloth, they become wet and, as a result, nasty to use. Because the fabric is absorbent, they are frequently corrupted by elements with which they come into contact. This can be a particularly disturbing fact since contaminated cords are often available to small children.
Although bungee cords are created in an assortment of lengths, some users complain that they never have the required length of cord for the function at hand. The only option is to bend, knot and tangle the cords in the hope that they will provide their intended use.
Recently, entirely adjustable straps constructed of synthetic rubber have been introduced to the market. Sizes immediately attainable are lengths of roughly two and three feet. But, they are easy to adjust via the slotted “links” running down the straps. They can also be “daisy chained” together to make usable lengths in multiples of their 2- and 3-foot standards as well as in fractions thereof. Perhaps most beneficial about these cargo straps is that they are virtually resistant to contamination by materials with which they come in contact, and they can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth or soap and water.
