A Quality Reel Like The Shimano Stella 18000SW Will Get You Quality Fish
If you have been out fishing in the open ocean then you may have come accross a pelagic fish called the Spanish Mackeral. Before I talk about the best way to catch them I would recommend that you have a good heavy duty reel to catch them with. You can not go wrong with the top of the range Shimano Stella 20000SW. You will not have any kinds of problems if you have one of these reels and look after because it is the best reel in the Shimano Stella Series. I have personally used this reel for the past couple of years and could not be happier. Check on the net and start doing some research on the type of reel which would be best for your kind of fishing and also which can handle the types of fish you intend on catching. I must tell you though you will end up paying a little bit for it though. A good reel does not come cheap.
Now, onto catching those elusive pelagics. These fish are strong and as soon as they feel resistance they will shoot off in the opposite direction so you need to hold on. As talked about in the above paragraph, you need to have the right gear. I also suggest using some tough line as well. The last thing you want is for your line to snap half way through winding it in. Or worse it breaking when you are pulling it out of the water. Hold on and get your fingers off the line and hope for one of those bad boys to grab on.
These fish are on the top of list for most fishermen and are the fish that a lot of people go out to catch and prepare their whole trip on this kind of fish. Fishing for these types of fish just keeps getting better and better as time goes on. The gear is getting better and better and this is not helping the depleted fish stocks out there so be carefull when you catch a small one. You can pick these fish up any time of the year. As with any fish there are better times when you will have more of a chance of hooking on to one of these pelagics. The drag is also very important so get it ready and even be prepared to change it up mid winding.
Live baits are the greatest lure you have to catch them. Try using something like a pilchard or a gar. The shallow water around the boat ramp is the best as they look for shelter. Try attracting fish like the gar by using bread and then when there are milling about throw out a net. But you should still try different techniques for catching them. Live bait is the best though so alway use it as a back up plan. Put some heavy line on your Shimano Stella 18000SW and you are away. Lures still work well if you know how to use them properly and one way which works well is trolling a lure behind your boat at all times. The enviroment is getting worse until people start to think about what they are taking home. You have to remember that if we want these sorts of fish to be around forever then we need to look after them.
