Crappies and the mayfly connection a must read!

In lakes that have populations of crappie and where there is a annual mayfly hatch a connection between the mayfly and the crappie is made every year. Crappie will gorge themselves full with mayfly nymphs in the spring and throughout the early summer whenever there is a fresh hatch of mayfly nymphs  If you learn the signs of a hatch you can get in on some amazing mayfly nymph crappie fishing. crappies are some amazing and very adaptable fish species. These fish have so many aliases such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth.

The mayfly’s don’t all hatch at once so you  will be able get into the mayfly connection at different times throughout the year. There are several different kinds of mayflies and they will hatch at different times, and this sequence may go on for 2 our 3 months.

At the height of the mayfly hatch, paper mouth will swim through massive clouds of aquatic mayfly nymphs with their mouths wide open, gorging on aquatic nymphs as they go until they are ful! You do not need any fishing electronics to take advantage of a mayfly hatch. You just need to pay attention and have the right crappie fishing tackle, equipment and crappie baits available. If you happen to be on the lake during one of these mayfly hatches you will be in for some spectacular crappie fishing.

If you are out on your boat and all of a sudden there is a mayfly sitting on your boat during the day or night this is a direct sign that there is a mayfly hatch going on somewhere near your location, and it is time to switch gears and get your crappie fly fishing gear ready. Amazingly mayfly’s in their adult form live only a few days after the hatch, just long enough to reproduce and then they die. The mayfly nymphs on the other hand may have life spans of up to 7 years.  Basically you are just going to target the aquatic nymphs and that is what your crappie bait selection will be targeting.

To locate mayfly hatching points there are a few obvious things that you can look for that indicate a hatch is in progress. Look for the papermouth coming up to the surface and leaving bubbles bubbles in the surface film. Is a key sign that the white perch are feed ing on mayfly nymphs. Look for hatches going on in shallow bays that have soft muckly bottoms like sand silt or mud. When you are getting your fly rod ready to catch crappie any dry fly selection that looks similar to a mayfly nymph will work to catch crappie. But matching the size and the color of the mayfly nymphs that are hatching gives you even a better advantage.  If you do not have a fly rod you can fly rod you can use spinning rod with a casting bubble. With a dry fly that looks like a mayfly nymph for your crappie bait selection. Other crappie bait selections that may work during a mayfly hatch to catch crappie are very small marabou jigs, fished under a slip bobber or casting bubble Gently pop the slip bobber or casting bubble to imitate rising mayfly nymphs.
