Cuberra Snapper Slideshow

Sportfishing in Costa Rica holds exhilerating adventures from catching massive marlin to inshore fare like Rooster fish and tunas. Costa Rica fishing is well-known for it’s variety of species and it’s extreme level of excitement. The following story is from our most recent Fishing Report:

Fishing for huge Cuberra Snappers is a challenge worthy of the most experienced angler. Using available tackle and this outside-the-box fishing tactic, the crews of FishingNosara.com have had incredible success on these hard-fightin’ giants.

After finding clear water over the coral reefs, we rig our live Bonita (also called Black Tuna) to the Penn 50W on the outriggers. Each of the baitfish are pulled with a J hook in the head of the fish and a circle hook in the fish’s back. The speed is set at a very quick 2.5 knots to keep pace with the Bonitas.

Be patient for about fourty-five minutes. While you are waiting eagerly, eighty feet under the deck those two feisty Bonitas are stirring up a big commotion. The large Cuberra Snappers will come out from hiding in their holes to investigate what the frenzy is about.

It’s important to realize that a masive Cuberra Snapper is not stupid. A 40lbs. Cuberra is 25 years old, a 60lbs. over 40 years old; they have to pass on a lot of lures to get this big. On the rare occasion they hit a a hook, they are known for staying close to their hole in the reef and can get away. However, if you can create a big enough believe it is safe to eat and will venture up the water column.

Get the baitfish back on board and reverse the hooks in the black tuna, placing the circle hook under the fish’s rear to make the bonita to swim directly down. With the Cuberra out of the reef, he can not resist a tasty meal swimming directly at him.

{HOLD ON! Usually the cuberras will be within 40ft. of the surface and they are STRONG! You will need at least 25lbs. of drag, and perhaps an extra crewman to keep you in the boa

These fish are not maneuverable or crafty at this point; just strong. These excellent tasting beauties are truly a high point in any fisherman’s career. Enjoy the videos and tactics sections of FishingNosara.com to see more about the best fishing in Costa Rica.
