Fishing Gear: Box or Bag?
Any serious or even part-time hobbyist in the world of fishing soon realises that kit soon piles up. Lures, reels, hooks, bobbers, weights and so on become more and more necessary as your angling style and skill develop. The requirement for an easy way of carrying all that kit around on fishing trips becomes all too obvious. There are two basic options available: a tackle box, or a tackle bag; they each serve the same purpose, is either better than the other? With a plethora of brands out there, which should you choose? Personally I tend to stick with Flambeau for boxes, whilst I favour Browning for tackle bags.
Points to Consider
Where are you fishing from – riverside, boat, jetty, pier, etc?
A rigid tackle box is more suited to the flat surfaces found on solid structures like boats and piers; riverside fishing may involve crossing rocky water and sitting on uneven riversides, more suited to the flexibility and generally easier carrying afforded by the less-rigid, bag option.
Does Size Matter?
As larger fish require larger lures in general, a tray and system tackle box may be the better choice
Are you a Novice, or a Child?
A small, simple version of either a bag or box will probably do, at least in the temporarily. However, given that the amount of kit one acquires it will not be long before the need of a serious bag or box becomes obvious.
Is Cost a Factor?
Obviously, you should set a budget, but it is worth saying that given the demands made on your tackle carrier, it is usually worth spending that bit extra to get a box or bag that will last a long time: chances are that something that costs less than $20 will not offer both the resilience and the adaptability of one that is pricier. Your tackle box or bag is as necessary a piece of equipment as the spares it carries.
Appearance?
A point for the ‘fashion-conscious’! Don’t be too swayed by how neat your box or bag looks; think “function”. Both the bag and the box perform the same useful function, and some from either range do look pretty neat.
When it comes to angling tackle boxes or bags, you’ll find that there are hundreds of options available. Whether you go to your nearest bait shop or Wal-Mart or whether you search online, you will be inundated with options. With many reputable brand makers out there it’s difficult to know quite where to begin, but I recommend the extensive ranges supplied by both Flambeau and by Browning.
Importantly, whichever bag or box you select, make it one that suits your requirements, and treat it as an important, long-term purchase.
