Gulf Coast Oil Spill Rages into Summer
During a time of the year when tens of thousands of residents, tourists and those who make their living from the Gulf of Mexico might be out on a boat or walking along a beach enjoying the many sights and activities that Florida, Alabama and Mississippi beaches have to offer, they are instead thinking about oil; oil that manifests itself as tarballs on previously pristine white beaches and that nightly newscasts show gushing into the ocean as if it were a demonic creature intent on killing anything and everything it comes in contact with.
Since the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform, thousands of barrels of crude oil continue to flow into the ocean every day. Scientists currently estimate the spill’s impact as up to 60,000 barrels a day, possibly even more. Delicate areas will be devastated, and marine life is being killed by the millions. This is the worst global eco-disaster of all time and the American public’s outrage is growing with each new photo that appears of oil-covered birds or toxic crude washing into delicate wetlands.
As Alabama oil spill lawsuits continue to grow, President Obama forced BP to create an escrow account to cover damages and claims of lost income. Businesses and individuals filing oil spill claims of lost revenue and wages range from fishing to tourism. Despite BP’s claim to have been thousands of lost income claims, many claimants have yet to receive anything at all.
The creation of a liability escrow will be an important step forward for the people whose livelihoods have been brought to a grinding halt. Not all parties are choosing the claims process, there are many Mississippi fishermen seeking oil spill lawyers with concern that anything they receive without a lawyer won’t be enough. Mark Tayamen is a shrimper whose work has been stopped by the spill. As quoted by Reuters, Mr. Tayamen said, “This is our livelihood. It’s where we have fun and teach our kids and grandchildren. There ain’t nothing out there now. The damage is done.”
Many of the businesses impacted by the BP oil spill are wondering whether to hope the BP or government oil spill claims system will cover their losses, join a class action oil spill lawsuit, or file their own oil spill lawsuit. The sad fact is there are no quick solutions for most. For all too many in the Gulf states it is too early to tell but too late to wait any longer.
