Instructions to respool a baitcasting reel

If you are in the market for or have recently purchased your new reel you will no doubt be over the moon with it.

Fishing reels and especially baitcasters have gotten a lot of popularity over the years despite being thought of more difficult to fish with, mainly due to how fast the line is released compared to other types of reel, such as spincasters.

Knowing how to put fishing line onto a baitcasting fishing reel though is usually an altogether new fight for you.

Putting the line onto a baitcasting reel is certainly a requitement as you are likely to have to do this when you first get your reel and of course you are almost certain to be in a situation where you need to do this on a fishing trip. But dont be worried, it isn’t too difficult if you follow these simple steps below.

To start with, you have to get some suitable line to spool. The make is up to you and more importantly what you are trying to catch although in a lot of cases 10lb test line will be best. With that said, if you are trying to catch larger fish then be certain to use a stronger line or you will end up with no fish and no line left either!

Although its a bit hard to do when on a fishing trip, a simple trick to make it easier is to put the line first in warm water for around 30 minutes and it helps to stop the line tangling so much as the bits that usually curl will be a lot looser. This is worth trying if you experience any problems doing it, but be sure to let it dry first.

Feed the free end of the fishing line through the rod guides that you can locate on the rod – these look like small metal circles. Start at the tip where the circle should be smaller than the others. You should notice they are larger towards the other end. Continue threading through the guides until you reach the reel end of the rod.

When done, wrap the line around the spool once and put a knot in it. This is used to start rewinding the line onto the spool. Place the new line on the floor as you wont need to hold it for the next part. In a standing position move the tip of the rod so it is right next to the the new line which is on the floor – This means the rod is now facing the ground. Try to close the distance between the new line and rod tip as much as possible.

Turn the fishing reel handle so it loads the new line onto the reel spool and keep going until it is full. As you are done, just cut the line after the rod tip and you’ve now spooled a baitcaisting reel.
