No Boat – No Worries – Lake Powell Boat Rentals Are Easy To Find
You don’t need to own a boat to explore or fish Lake Powell, a 186-mile long body of water surrounded by a scenic desert paradise. Running from northern Arizona to southern Utah, it is an area of the Colorado River that became a lake in 1963 upon completion of construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. It is currently the second largest man-made lake in the United States. The Lake Powell region is more commonly referred to as Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. A terrific vacation destination for families, groups and avid sportsmen, fishing is one of the~ favorite forms of recreation in this area, and Lake Powell fishing boat rental businesses are located in many locations around the lake shore. With more than two thousand miles of winding, canyon-carved coastline – more than the entire West Coast of the U.S. – Lake Powell has nooks and crannies to spare.
Even with the nearly three million annual visitors, the sheer expanse of the lake ensures there’s always a great angling area to be found, and new areas of the lake to explore with each visit.
The lake is stocked with all sorts of scaly critters such as striped bass, small mouth and large mouth bass, shad, rainbow trout, bluegill, black crappie, channel catfish, walleye, and more. Any time of year is a good time to fish, but early spring is considered the best time of year by many, especially from March through the first two weeks of May, because the summer crowds have not yet arrived.
For a lot of Glen Canyon visitors, hauling a boat into the region has become quite an challenge. Not only are the roads at times a bit of a challenge when towing a big boat, but with the zebra mussel issue that has affected numerous lakes in the country, all those transporting their own boats will have to go through a rigorous inspection of their water craft before launch. At the bigger launch areas including Wahweap and Bullfrog, personal craft are subjected to inspection by trained workers, inspections are available only during specified hours. Self-certification continues to be allowed at smaller, out of the way launch areas. It’s imperative that all boaters make sure their boats are free of this invasive species. Should zebra mussels get into Lake Powell, the aquatic ecosystem could be drastically changed, so it’s up to everyone to do their part to keep them out. Needless to say, if someone owns a boat and wants to bring it, they are welcome to do so. There are several boat launch areas at different places around the shoreline.
There are numerous types of motorboats available for rental including fishing vessels, houseboats, ski boats, jet skis, and personal aquatic vehicles. They come in many different sizes, ranging from jet skis to large party boats suitable for large groups on multi-night trips. Smaller boats are good not only for fishing, but they enable visitors to maneuver through shallower locations closer to the shoreline.
While Lake Powell is well-known for its great fishing, it is the juxtaposition of the blue green waters to the red orange canyon walls that makes the scenery spectacular. Several natural attractions dot the landscape. Among the best are Rainbow Bridge National Monument – a natural stone bridge, Navajo Canyon, La Gorce Arch and the Cathedral in the Desert. This last attraction is about 45 minutes from the Bullfrog launch and is known for its towering walls of sandstone and amazing spiritual quality. Depending on the water level in the lake, a more compact boat can pull right up to it. For those with smaller boats, accessibility to many narrow side canyons that can potentially provide excellent fishing, as well as the seclusion many boaters require, and of course, in the hotter months, great swimming and hiking trails are available as well.
During the summer months the water temperature gets up to around 80 degrees. It drops considerably during the colder months of the year, or during the heavy snow melt months. Even during the colder water months, there is still good fishing to be had. When planning a trip to Glen Canyon, never fret about leaving your boat at home. Lake Powell boat rentals are the easiest way to get out on the open water, cast a line and bring in your evening meal.
