Nuts and Bolts to Jug Line Fishing Productively
For the fisherman that really wants to pull in the fish, especially catfish, you need to read this. Don’t worry, because you’re about to find out just what jug fishing is, how it’s done, and what tackle to use to prepare for catching fish.
The idea behind jug line fishing is to take a jug or float, put on a fishing line and hook with some bait and putting it out there for the fish. What you are trying to do here is to get a lot of bait in the water, to increase your odds of being able to land a nice mess of fish, usually catfish. Think about being able to fish 12 spots on the lake all at once. This is what jug fishing can do for you.
Jug fishing can be categorized into 2 main kinds. The two kinds of jug fishing we are talking about are free floating and anchored jugging.
In the anchored style of jug fishing, you’ll be tying your jug lines to a solid object, such as tree, stump, rock or other set object in or near the water. One other way to do it is to put a heavy weight on you’re the end of your line to keep the jug in one spot.
But with regard to free floating jugs, there aren’t any additional weights or tie offs, you just rig up, and set the jug in the water. Place your jug well, as the wind and waves are going to carry it along, and you want to have an idea of where it might end up.
For a typical jug line, get a quart sized jug, a swivel, a circle hook and some twine or heavy leader line to get started. For anchored jugging on the bottom, place a big weight on the end of line with your hook a few feet up from the bottom. For shallow anchored style jugging, get a rope and tie the jug off directly to a branch, rock or stump that is in the area you want to fish. The best bait to use is live perch or shad, but you can use dead shad or perch and still catch some great catfish.
