Use Crappie Lures to Catch Crappie

If you really want to catch crappie, and who doesn’t, then you need to find out just exactly what types of things that crappie like to eat, and what the best types of lures are to throw at them. The crappie is a small panfish, usually smaller than most of the other game fish in the water, and it is targeted by bigger game such as walleye, bass, pike, and others. Just the sound of a stringer full of succulent crappie makes a fantastic dinner, and my mouth salivate. So what are these types of lures that can bring in the crappie fast?

As with most other game fishing, there are a few different types of crappie fishing lures that will work. Some of the better ones are the crappie jig and plastic worm, but crappie will also hit cranks and spinnerbaits.

Crappie jigs are the most time tested effective lures to catching crappie. Using jig heads that are 1/16th or less in weight with chenille, hair or tinsel bodies and skirts are fantastic. Use darker colors in murky water, and white or lighter colors in clear water. Most crappie fisherman use the old jigging technique to entice the crappie to bite.

Second best are soft plastic lures. Generally, you’ll still use small jig heads and focus on light colors for clear water, and darker colors like dark red, purple or others in murky water. These soft plastics should be grubs, minnows or shad, as that matches up best with what crappie feed on.

With regard to spinner baits, focus on straight shaft spinners with only 1 blade. Fish them slow, and with a little bit of weight to keep them down.

Last, if the fish are really deep, you can put on a small shad like or minnow like crankbait to draw the crappie. Look to the previous color scheme mentioned here when you are choosing what colors to throw at the fish. If you liked this, check out more fantastic fishing tips to make you a better fisherman.
