Planer boards work great for suspended walleye or when the walleye are schooled very close to shore. The key to using planer boards is to get your bait as far away from the boat as possible. Do not get the idea that to be a successful walleye fisherman that you need to fish with planner boards, that is not the case you can be very successful without them. When running boards, a very important thing to consider is the stability of your boards. Therefore it is a must that your boards be able to function flawlessly at slow speeds. It is very important to always check your boards before you go trolling for walleye. Keeping you boards fine tuned and the surface of the boards in good shape can make the difference of you having a successful fishing trip. Remember your planer boards need to perform well at slower trolling speeds.
When you are fishing with planerboards it is important to remember that one set depth will not always work. Keep close attention to your depthfinder and fish finder to identify where to set your depths. Experimentation is very important to find your walleye catching sweet spot.

When you start out for the day, try going 40 feet back from the planer board with your weight and about 40 feet back from your weight with the lure. This will make adjustments easy, and you’ll be starting at a good mid-point.
Here is another common question: “what kind of walleye fishing equipment will I need to get started fishing with planerboards?” A good basic planer board equipment package would consist of (2) planerbaords, (2) rod holders, (2) sets of snap weights, and (2) Walleye fishing trolling rod and reel combos. It is a real plus if the reels have line counters included. The line test should be 10 to 12 lbs.
