You can catch crappie on just about any crappie bait using a variety of different crappie fishing rigs. speckled perch will be found in multiple locations such as weed beds, flats, breaks, and some will always be suspended. They may be concentrated in just one of these areas, but many times during the pre-summer period you will find papermoth at all of these locations at the same time.

 You will be able to catch crappie with live bait or artificial crappie jigs. Also a combination of crappie jig heads tipped with crappie live bait such as crappie minnows, flat head minnows, shiners, and small crayfish will work well. Actually just about any crappie bait will work well during the pre-summer period.

 In deep southern lakes and reservoirs  papermoth will appear on primary and secondary points on the main lake where there is a break or drop off to deeper water. Deep timbered channel edges will also hold calico bass during the pre-summer period.

 In northern lakes speckled perch will move to area’s to establish themselves in the habitat they intend to stay with throughout the summer. As long as their natural food source remain the same the crappie will remain in these areas. That is why in northern lakes the speckled bass will be very predicable during this period and crappie baits such as any live bait like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and even fresh mussel meat will work to catch crappie during the pre-summer and summer periods.

We all wish we could change our crappie fishing style by looking at the calendar but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. The typical changes we see on land with the change of the seasons such as from winter to spring, from spring to summer, summer to fall , and fall to winter are not the same under the water. Under the water changes are dictated by the length of daylight which is known as the photo period. Animals from small microorganisms such as zooplankton all the way up to the fiercest of game fish react to these changes. The change in the length of daylight will cause pole crappie to migrate, spawn, and to change their feeding habits.

There are a few crappie fishing calendars that can be purchased that identify specific details of what when and where for crappie fishing seasonal changes. The best one I have come across is published by in-Fisherman and is designed to identify seasonal changes based on the fishing activity levels and seasonal needs of the calico bass.

Crappies can adapt and live in jusy about any type of lake and they go by names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. You will be able to catch crappie in oligotrophic lakes (in back water areas), mesotrophic lakes, and eutrophic lakes.

 Oligotrophic lakes are very young in geological terms and you will only be able to catch crappie in these lakes if they are in their late stage of  eutrophication, and there is a good chance you will only find pole crappie in back water areas because the water temperatures are higher. Typically, oligotrophic lakes do not hold large populations of paper mouth.The majority of  oligotrophic lakes are found only in the northern latitudes of north America so there are only a few of these lakes that are located in the white perch habitat range. You can use a variety of different crappie bait to catch crappie in the back water areas such as live crappie minnows, fathead minnows, and small crayfish. You can also fish crappie jigs with plastic grubs tipped with wax worms around any structure such as sunken trees and logs or brush.

 A mesotrophic lake are sometimes called middle aged lakes and will hold good populations of paper mouth. Sand and gravel bottoms are the norm in these lakes and they harbor quite a few large shallow flats. There is abundant vegetation and a very good speckled bass food supply in these lakes. These lakes are typically located in the northern latitude of north America but just south of most oligotrophic lakes. There are normally large populations of white perch in mesotrophic lakes. You can use traditional crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and wax worms to catch crappie. Crappie jigs tipped with plastic grubs and soft plastics will work also. You will find strawberry bass on the large flats and on the edges of the plentiful vegetation in these lakes.

 A eutrophic lake is the oldest type of lake in geological terms and seldom are over 40 ft deep. These lakes are typically referred to as dishpan lakes. If the water is clear there is typically thick shallow weed growth which is a perfect  calico bass habitat to catch crappie. In murky eutrophic lakes there is typically sparse weed growth with bottom being muck, marl, or clay. These lakes have progressed through the mesotrophic stage from amny years of sediment filling in. Typically these lakes are most fertile and hold very large populations of paper mouth in their early stages eutrophication. You can catch crappie in these lakes by fishing sunken brush and weed line edges. You can use crappie live baits such as crappie minnows, fathead minnows, shiners, small crayfish and wax worms. Artificial crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms work well too.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

Yes crappies which go by peculiar names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and papermouth can be caught during the coldwater period of fall and early winter. The cold water period typically starts after the water has turned over and the thermocline stratified  Also The water temperatures will have dropped below the mid 50 degree mark. Surface water temperatures will be the same as the bottom water temperatures. As the weather continues to get colder the water temperatures at the bottom will be warmer than that at surface. One the water has turned, Coldwater crappie fishing patterns will start to emerge.

 Although the speckled basse’s metabolism has dropped the cooling envirement has also triggered the speckled basse’s instinct to feed for the upcoming winter months. The paper mouth may move slow during the cold water period but they will not pass up a good  meal if you present a good crappie bait.

 To catch crappie in large deeper lakes and reservoirs during the stable coldwater period you will need crappie fishing rigs set up for a deep water crappie fishing presentation. And ideal crappie bait to use during this period is any small invertabrates such as small crayfish.  During the cold water period the water turnover sends the the warmest oxinated water to the bottom , and the coldest water goes to the top. Soon after the water turnover period has stabilized all the paper mouth and the natural forage will they need will seek the deep water area where the waters are warmest.

 To fish the a deep water presentation you will need to use a good deep water slip bobber rig with crappie jigs and crappie jigs with safety pin spinners. A excellent coldwater crappie live bait selection to catch crappie would be small crayfish, crappie minnows, fathead minnows or shiners. You can also catch crappie with a deepwater slop bobber rig fished on the bottom using enough weight and a crappie hook tipped with a live small crayfish as your crappie bait. In larger deep lakes and reservoirs you will find speckled bass at deep areas off main lake shorelines in 3o to 45ft of water loacated on a soft bottom area. In shallow bowl shapped lakes with little structure, speckled bass may suspend right in the middle of the lake in 20 to 30 ft of water. In any pole crappies habitat area, crappie will suspend 5 to 10ft off the bottom. During the stable coldwater period coldwater period you will seldom find pole crappies near the surface.
