When you you go bait fishing for crappie with live bait having a stocked tackle back full of needed crappie live bait fishing tackle is very important to make up your crappie live bait fishing rigs.If you plan on only fishing crappie minnows than your tackle box may be quite small. You will need small fixed depth bobbers, I use a Styrofoam bobber that slides on your line and then you put a small wooden stick at the top of the bobber to keep the line from sliding through. You can move the bobber up and down the line you need to remove the stick first, then replace it once you are at your desired depth.

It is very important if you are going to go bait fishing for suspended crappie to have an assortment of different slip boobers. Slip bobbers come in a assortment of different sizes and shapes. One of my favorite types for suspended crappie is a pencil shaped slip bobber. Make sure you size your slip bobber to the size of the live bait you plan on fishing with, and the sinker size you intend to use. If you are fishing deep water you will need more weight to get you bait down to the desired depth quickly. As a result you will need a larger slip bobber. You want your slip bobber to just barely stay afloat with your live bait and sinker attached so you you can notice the very slightest of crappie hits. You also do not want the crappies to feel any line resistance when they take your live bait presentation.

If you plan on fishing for crappies with any crappie jigs that you plan on tipping with live bait then you will need at least a selection different plain jigs in various sizes, from 1/64 ounce to 1/16 ounce. Have at least a quantity of 5 each of the different sizes. You will be able to cast the smaller jigs if you add a bobber.

You also will need to keep a spool of 4 to 8 pound test line in your tackle box for situations were you are fishing with ultra light crappie fishing tackle. You should also have a spool of 15lb test line in case you find an area to fish heavy brush or weed cover. It better to bend your Aberdeen hooks then break your line in these situations.  A good quick fishing knot to use when you are crappie fishing is the Palomar knot. And this knot works well for any test line you will use.

Another very useful piece of crappie fishing tackle that works great for brushy or thick weed areas is the safety pin spinner and you should have a t least an assortment of 5 each in your tackle box. They are easy to use and assemble directly your existing crappie jigs. They not only ad some flash to your crappie live bait presentation but they also make your crappie fishing rig weedless.  The safety pin spinner bait is also a good way to get the crappies attention on a slow fishing day. Remove any plastic from your jig and slide on a fathead crappie minnow and let the spinner bait do its work.

When white perch,pole crappies move into the pre summer period which happens when the water temperature goes into the 70 degree range. The pre-summer period is when the speckled perch move into their regular feeding patterns and they are much more predicable.

 The pre-summer period is when the food chain is most plentiful and the crappie are in full feeding mode. You can catch crappie on just about any crappie bait using a variety of different crappie fishing rigs. speckled perch will be found in multiple locations such as weed beds, flats, breaks, and some will always be suspended. They may be concentrated in just one of these areas, but many times during the pre-summer period you will find papermoth at all of these locations at the same time.

 You will be able to catch crappie with live bait or artificial crappie jigs. Also a combination of crappie jig heads tipped with crappie live bait such as crappie minnows, flat head minnows, shiners, and small crayfish will work well. Actually just about any crappie bait will work well during the pre-summer period.

 In deep southern lakes and reservoirs  papermoth will appear on primary and secondary points on the main lake where there is a break or drop off to deeper water. Deep timbered channel edges will also hold calico bass during the pre-summer period.

 In northern lakes speckled perch will move to area’s to establish themselves in the habitat they intend to stay with throughout the summer. As long as their natural food source remain the same the crappie will remain in these areas. That is why in northern lakes the speckled bass will be very predicable during this period and crappie baits such as any live bait like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, and even fresh mussel meat will work to catch crappie during the pre-summer and summer periods.

Most people think that the crappie jig catches the most and the biggest crappies, but contrary to popular belief it is live bait that has caught the most and also that largest trophy slab crappie over the years. According to studies and statistics that have been kept and the studies that have been done since the early 1970’s crappie live bait has come out the winner for catching the most and biggest crappie. It is key to know the crappie or called other names such as calico bass,speckled bass,speckled perch,white perch,pole crappie,stawberry bass, and papermouth. The best live baits that have caught the most and biggest crappie are such crappie baits as crappie, minnows, crappie shiners, waxworms, small gizzard shad, small threadfin shad, and earthworms. These crappie live baits were used in combination with slip float fishing rigs, crappie jigs, worm harnesses, crappie spinner baits and crappie ice jigs. Crappie spinner baits were tipped with crappie minnows, shiners, and night crawlers. Crappie jigs were tipped with crappie minnows, shiners and nightcrawlers to catch crappie. Worm harnesses were used using small earth worms or pieces of night crawlers. Top live baits that have produced award winning crappie catches are large crappie minnows, shiners, waxworms, fathead minnows , small gizzard shad, small threadfin shad, leaches, earthworms, creek chubs, and herring. These live baits were used with jig head and spinner bait combinations.

The best artificial crappie baits used to catch crappies were in the size range of 1/16oz to 1/2oz. The crappie artificial bait types varied greatly. Crappie jigs in the size range of 1/16oz to 3/8oz tipped with a plastic grub or other soft plastics in combination with a crappie jig head of a variety of colors caught a good number of award crappies too. If the jigs were tipped with wax worms the number crappies caught increased even more. Plain crappie jig heads of a number of colors tipped with crappie minnows or shiners were a producer when bait fishing for crappie also.

Over the years there are a few crappie fishing jig head and soft plastic combos that have consistently caught large numbers of crappies. A jig head painted different colors in the size range of 1/16 oz to 1/8 oz tipped with a Mister Twister curly tail is the top producer of crappie catches of all times. Mepps crappie spinner baits and small floating rapalas have also been top producers of large award winning crappies. When you combine these artificial crappie lures with crappie live bait they have produced even more consistently.

During the summer peak period the white perch food chain is at it’s peak and the  speckled perch metabolism has reached it’s peak. The transition from the cold water period  to the warm water period is complete. Hatching insects have left millions of husks on the surface. Rooted aquatic plants have reached the surface and they have begun to bend forward and provide excellent cover for the crappie food chain is at it’s peak and the  speckled bass.

 The white perch food chain is at it’s peak and the  strawberry bass is very predicable during the peak summer period because the will move far as long as their food source remains plentiful. You can catch crappie during this period with crappie fishing jigs tipped with a variety of soft plastic grubs, or crappie live bait such as crappie minnows,shiners,fathead minnows,small crayfish,small shad,wax worms, and even mussel meat.

 In Natural lakes deep weeds will form distinct edges and white perch food chain is at it’s peak and the  pole crappie will roam here all summer long. Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

Yes crappies which go by peculiar names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and papermouth can be caught during the coldwater period of fall and early winter. The cold water period typically starts after the water has turned over and the thermocline stratified  Also The water temperatures will have dropped below the mid 50 degree mark. Surface water temperatures will be the same as the bottom water temperatures. As the weather continues to get colder the water temperatures at the bottom will be warmer than that at surface. One the water has turned, Coldwater crappie fishing patterns will start to emerge.

 Although the speckled basse’s metabolism has dropped the cooling envirement has also triggered the speckled basse’s instinct to feed for the upcoming winter months. The paper mouth may move slow during the cold water period but they will not pass up a good  meal if you present a good crappie bait.

 To catch crappie in large deeper lakes and reservoirs during the stable coldwater period you will need crappie fishing rigs set up for a deep water crappie fishing presentation. And ideal crappie bait to use during this period is any small invertabrates such as small crayfish.  During the cold water period the water turnover sends the the warmest oxinated water to the bottom , and the coldest water goes to the top. Soon after the water turnover period has stabilized all the paper mouth and the natural forage will they need will seek the deep water area where the waters are warmest.

 To fish the a deep water presentation you will need to use a good deep water slip bobber rig with crappie jigs and crappie jigs with safety pin spinners. A excellent coldwater crappie live bait selection to catch crappie would be small crayfish, crappie minnows, fathead minnows or shiners. You can also catch crappie with a deepwater slop bobber rig fished on the bottom using enough weight and a crappie hook tipped with a live small crayfish as your crappie bait. In larger deep lakes and reservoirs you will find speckled bass at deep areas off main lake shorelines in 3o to 45ft of water loacated on a soft bottom area. In shallow bowl shapped lakes with little structure, speckled bass may suspend right in the middle of the lake in 20 to 30 ft of water. In any pole crappies habitat area, crappie will suspend 5 to 10ft off the bottom. During the stable coldwater period coldwater period you will seldom find pole crappies near the surface.

But actually the majority of crappie are caught either with a complete live bait presentation or artificial bait tipped with some type of living bait. The most important type of crappie live bait that most fisherman use is some type of crappie minnow such as golden shiners, and flathead minnows. Both of these crappie minnow types are raised by the millions in fish farms through out the United States and sold at nearly all bait shops and bait dealers.

But there are still many fisherman that catch their own wild crappie minnows at the locations they intend to fish. The most common wild crappie minnows that fisherman catch on a regular basis for live bait are the bluntnose minnow,blacknose dace,creek chubs,hornyhead chubs,red shinners, and mud minnows. These fisherman use minnow seines, nets and minnow traps to catch their live bait.

The most hardy live bait fish and small gold fish like fathead minnows, mud minnows, and small gold fish will stay alive for long periods of time if the bait container they are stored in is aerated and they are kept cool. Then there are moderately hardy living bait fish like baby bluegills, creek chubs, horney head chubs, southern redbelly dace, blacknose dace, and bluntnose minnows. Then there are the fragile crappie baits that fisherman use that need to be caught and fished with almost immediately and they are the emerald shiner, small gizzard shad, threadfin shad and spotted shiners.

If you are primarily a crappie jig fisherman here’s a good fishing tip when the crappies have absolutely turned off. Sometimes you can get crappies turn back on with a simple trick. go to your the most likely spot that should be producing crappie. Put about 1/2 dozen crappie minnows in a glass jar filled with water with the lid on tie a retrieve line on and lower the jar right next to the likely structure. wait about 15 minutes and tip your favorite crappie jig with a live minnow and start jigging right next to were your lowered the live bait minnow.

Bluegill fry make an excellent live bait selection especially if you want to target crappies in ponds where the young fry that crappie feed on are from bluegill or sunfish hatch.  I would recommend you check with your local department of natural resources because in some states using these fry as bait may be illegal. The best size fry to use to catch crappie are 1″ to 2″ in length. You can use a minnow Seine, cast net or minnow trap to catch these fry. You won’t find them at any bait shop. Actual bluegill and sunfish fry make up a big percentage of the crappies natural food source. Make sure when you fish bluegill fry you stay just a little bit farther away from the cover then if you were fishing standard crappie minnows. Bluegill or sunfish fry will tangle very easily in any standing cover. It will take a bit of practice because the bluegill fry may feel exactly like a actual crappie bite to you. So you will need to be able to figure out the difference quickly. But to be honest most of the crappie bits you will get using this live bait will be hard strikes.

One of the most under used crappie baits are small threadfin or small gizzard shad especally if you want to catch a creelful of crappie! The shad actually makes up from 50 to 90 percent of the crappies food source in some locations where there are large populations of shad. Amazingly shad is not often picked as a crappie fishing live bait selection. Probably the main reason is they are hard to keep alive in your bait bucket. But if you can catch them fresh and use them right away you will be surprise how many crappie will hit this bait and hit it hard! The two types of shad that are populated throughout the united states are the threadfin shad and the gizzard shad. You can use either of these shad in the 2 to 3 inch size range to catch crappie. The smaller size fish make excellent a excellent live bait selection. The best way to catch fresh shad is to use cast net. Go to areas such as bridges, power plants piers and rip rap where shad tend to school. The best way to keep shad alive is to use a bait container that floats in the water and has freshwater moving in and out of it. If you use a bait container on your boat it needs to be aerated. these fish like I said will die easily. You can hook shad through the lips or just below the dorsal fin. Shad work great where the water is very stained and traditional crappie minnows are not cutting it.

Were the crappie hits on the windward side of the structure? You get the picture, details are very important to formulate a pattern to fish for the day.

#2 Guideline It is very important to be very quiet when you are targeting any species of fish and that includes the sport of crappie fishing. I can guarantee that any slab crappie will scatter if you make any noises such as moving around in the boat, dropping things to the bottom of the boat talking loudly ext. These fish are older and they are savvy. They will move if they sense anything that is unnatural to their habitat. Sound carries in water just as it does in the air. This is one of the easiest crappie fishing rules to adhere too. But you would be surprised how many rookie fisherman overlook this simple tip.

#3 Guideline How many times have you been out crappie fishing and you get hungry and reach down and pull out a handful of chips or eat a sandwich, then you go right back to handling your crappie baits? Well crappie can smell the things that you just ate and the different smell may be just enough to cause them not to bite or move off. Next time you eat out on the water wipe your hands clean then rub them with some commercial crappie scent. You will be surprised how much this tip may increase your crappie catch.

#1 rule You need to take a “Never Give Up Attitude” Rome was not built in a day! To be a good fisherman it takes lots of practice and experience just like any other sport. If you do horribly one day out on the water use your failure to your advantage. Put your day under a microscope and determine what you did wrong, then document it. The documenting will help you remember not to do it again. Also, if you have an exceptional day, document went right for you. I put this rule as number one because if you take a never give up attitude you are going to become a better crappie angler.

#2 rule Documentation is very important if you want to improve as a fisherman. You need to log your crappie fishing trips. You cannot define your guidelines and rules if you don’t log your successes and failures. You should log every detail of your trip such as , water clarity, what baits you used, how deep you fished, detail GPS information of where you fished, and of course date and time.

#3 rule It is very important that you do some research and learn how to fish for crappie with live bait. There will be times that just using crappie jigs won’t cut it. Many professionals use a combination of crappie live bait and artificial baits when fishing for crappie. If the fish are not hitting on your main crappie jigs you may need to switch to live bait or a combination of live and artificial baits. You need to concentrate your research around your local area that you fish most of the time. In any location you need to use crappie live baits that are a natural food source for the local crappie population.
