The main difference between the pre-spawn and early spring period is that the channel catfish’s metabolism is increasing and they are becoming more active so they are aggressively looking for catfish bait.

The settling period includes the post spawn and the pre-summer periods when water temperatures rise to about 80 degrees and above. As the water levels start to drop the channel catfish will start their move to deep water areas down stream or deeper areas on a lake or reservoir. They will still feed aggressively during the night hours in shallows but move deeper during the daylight hours.

The summer period which includes summer peak , summer and post summer periods occurs when the water temperatures rise to 80 degrees and above. The summer period includes much of July, August, and September. Summer is the prime time to fish for channel catfish because they are predicable and actively feeding. You can continue to catch channel catfish while bait fishing using cut bait for your catfish bait selection. Some common bait fish to use for cut bait are gizzard shad , skipjack herring, shiners and creek chubs.

As the cooling period starts channel catfish and blue catfish will head for deeper holes in rivers and lakes. And will be less active as the whole cycle of life starts over again.

During the summer flat head catfish will normally only feed on live bait that is near their area such as shad, yellow perch, pan fish and other forage fish in the area, but during the pre-spawn time right after ice out they will feed aggressively on dead catfish bait such as cut bait chucks. An excellent cutbait for blue catfish and channel catfish are oily forage fish such as skipjack herring, and gizzard shad. Mussels also make an excellent catfish bait fresh or seasoned in sour milk for a few days.

There are some basic cut bait fishing rigs that work well for different fishing situations. The types of catfish rigs we will mention are quick hit rigs, three way swivel fishing rigs, a basic slip sinker rig, modified slip sinker rig, and a basic slip bobber fishing rig.

A quick hit fishing rig is used a lot to fish for flat head and blue catfish. To make a quick hit rig you will need two number 2 to 1/0 treble hooks, a three way swivel, and a bell sinker large enough to keep your live bait close to the bottom In shallow water areas a ½ ounce will usually work but if you are fishing for blue catfish in current or trying to anchor your catfish bait for flathead catfish you will need much larger bell sinkers typically from 3 ounces to 8 ounces. The size you select will be determined by how large your bait is and how strong the current is.

First tie on the three way swivel to your main fishing line, then tie on a 6 to 24 inch dropper that has your bell sinker attached. Then tie on the quick hit rig to the last open eye on the three way swivel.

To make your quick hit fishing rig tie the lead treble hook on to a 12 to 30 inch leader using aimproved clinch knot. Next, tie the second treble hook about 4” away from the lead treble hook using a snell or uni-knot. You will want to use a gizzard shad for your catfish bait in the 8 inch to 10 inch size range. Insert just one of the hooks of the lead treble right behind the shad’s head in the upper flesh area. Next insert just one of the hooks of the lead treble behind the dorsal fin in the top flesh area.

To make a standard three way swivel rig first tie your three way swivel to the main line. Next tie your dropper to one of the open leads of the three way swivel. The dropper rig should have a bell sinker ½ ounce for shallow water or 3 ounces to 8 ounces if you are using large size catfish baits foe blue catfish and channel catfish. The leader should be 6 to 24 inches long with a 5/0 to 7/0 hook.

To make a basic slip sinker rig slide an egg sinker on your line then tie on a 5/0 to 7/0 hook. Then clamp on a split shot sinker up the line 6 to 24 inches from the hook. This type of slip sinker fishing rig tend to hang up quite often and many fisherman use the modified slip sinker rig instead, because of this reason.

To make a modified slip sinker fishing rig slide a ½ to 4ounce bell sinker up the line. Next tie on a two way swivel. The tie on a 6 to 24 inch leader with a 5/0 to 7/0 hook.

Crappie are a gamefish that are located in waters in all the lower 48 states and they go by many different games such as calico crappie,speckled perch,speckled bass,pole crappie,white perch,stawberry bass, and paper mouth. Bait fishing for crappie using crank baits is probably one of the most seldom used method of catching crappie. One of the best places and time to use these crappie lures is when they are feeding on schools of threadfin shad, and gizzard shad.

The best sizes select when bait fishing for crappie are 1 1/4″ to 3 1/2″ size crank baits. It is not uncommon when the  crappie are in a feeding frenzy to hook a few double catches of crappie at the same time. When you make your selection make sure you select a crank bait lure that has a rattle built into it. The vibration really attracts stawberry bass. You also want to match the color of your crank bait to the color of the bait fish that the calico crappie are feed on, or as close as you can get. For example if you are following the shad schools catch a few shad to check their size and color. Also you should try to match the movement of your lure when you are bait fishing as close as you can to the movement of the bait fish the paper mouth are feeding on. Here again watch the shad as they move through the water and try to set your cranks to move the same as close as you can.

Cranks work great in the spring during the spawning season. When speckled bass are on their beds they hit just about anything that comes close to their nest. Stawberry Bass are very active and feeding like crazy because the have been so inactive during the winter months. Their metabolisms start to crank up and they are ready to feed. This is a good thing for us crappie fisherman. The bait fish that the crappie will be feeding on will be larger because the bait fish will have not spawned yet so there will not be an abundance of bait fish fry to feed on. Again, another good reason to use crank baits for crappie.

Other very good spots to catch crappie with cranks are around docks, weed edges, and rock points. You will need to have a variety of different types of crank baits. You will want to have some shallow runners, deep divers, and crank baits that stay suspended. If you can find bait fishing crank baits that are lip less you will have better luck. Lip less crank baits can be used in clear or muddied or stained waters. You need to have a variety of sizes and both floating and sinking lip less cranks. 1 to 3 inch with 1/12 to 1/2 once weights work he best. Sonic lip less crank baits work the best because they have a internal rattle built into them. Crappie are very attracted to vibrations and have very sensitive hearing.

The most hardy live bait fish and small gold fish like fathead minnows, mud minnows, and small gold fish will stay alive for long periods of time if the bait container they are stored in is aerated and they are kept cool. Then there are moderately hardy living bait fish like baby bluegills, creek chubs, horney head chubs, southern redbelly dace, blacknose dace, and bluntnose minnows. Then there are the fragile crappie baits that fisherman use that need to be caught and fished with almost immediately and they are the emerald shiner, small gizzard shad, threadfin shad and spotted shiners.

If you are primarily a crappie jig fisherman here’s a good fishing tip when the crappies have absolutely turned off. Sometimes you can get crappies turn back on with a simple trick. go to your the most likely spot that should be producing crappie. Put about 1/2 dozen crappie minnows in a glass jar filled with water with the lid on tie a retrieve line on and lower the jar right next to the likely structure. wait about 15 minutes and tip your favorite crappie jig with a live minnow and start jigging right next to were your lowered the live bait minnow.

Amazingly game fish will travel distances out of their comfort zone, and sometimes their normal habitat in pursuit of food. Game-fish are opportunists because they will adapt to to their environment if their favorite type of food is not available. If you can learn any species of fish eating patterns you can like I said before, be very successful when you go bait fishing. One of the main reasons game-fish eat different foods at different times of the year is because they can adapt to the food choices that are available at any particular season of the year. it is this reason that one type of bait fishing selection in one fishing location may not work in another location.

For example if you are fishing an area for walleye and you notice there are an abundance of shad schools in open water, chances are there are walleye and other game fish close by feeding on the schools. The wise choice for your bait fishing selection would be small live or dead thread fin or gizzard shad which ever one makes up the schools of shad. If you were fishing artificials then use some type of lure that mimics the size,color and movement of the shad that are located in the schools.
