You will always have customers asking questions and making requests about their spinning reels (and ones they want) if you make a living at a tackle shop. Most anglers want to learn how to spool their reel with line that offers heavier test. They also want to have better casting abilities and discover what line is best for which purpose. However, you don’t have to be employed in a tackle shop to answer these questions and more.

In the northeast, striped bass start invading local rivers in the early spring making it one of the busiest seasons for tackle shops. Fishermen are trying to determine which line is most suited for the best bass fishing. Bass can require line in the 20-lb range and in some cases, even heavier line. The novice fisherman is more likely to have problems with this than the seasoned angler. Too often, the novice will have an undersized reel and expect it will work effectively with this heavier line. This can create poor casting results.

All anglers need to know the line length and size suggested on the side of their spools. Once that number is exceeded, the cast becomes impaired. A spool is only geared to handle a specific amount and diameter of line. Besides, normal monofilament retains memory, meaning that, once the manufacturer winds a spool of line, it conforms to the spool and begins to coil. You’ll see an increase in stiffness with heavier line, creating a new cycle of coils. Opening the bail causes the line to come off the spool, slowing it as it tries to exit the guides and causing a high level of friction. End result: a mess and, most likely, a short tangled cast.

Anglers would have a reel for everything in an ideal universe. Because this isn’t a perfect world, I usually tell them to have a reel set for the heavy fish, at the least. If they can’t afford this, or simply do not want to fool with it, I then recommend using braided line. Braided line offers a significantly smaller diameter than traditional mono, often nearly double the pound-for-pound test. This gives fisherman heavy line on a smaller-diameter spool without giving up a good cast. This thin diameter, combined with no memory retention and slippery coating, makes braided much smarter for improving cast distance. Nevertheless, the drawback is that it is not resistant to abrasion. To improve this, make sure to use a 3 or 4-ft fluorocarbon or mono leader, too.

One of the biggest mistakes that create problems is reel that is not filled properly. Remember, the recommended line amounts are on your reel for a reason – this is the optimal amount of line for optimal fishing. Under-filling a reel or over-filling hampers casting. The rule of thumb for optimal casting is to fill your reel to about one eighth of an inch below the rim – this will help ensure the best possible casting results.

Common sense is the secret to spinning reel issues. Understanding how your reel works, understanding the best line to use on it and a common sense approach to keeping it filled will result in better overall results. Better overall results with your reel mean that you will enjoy a day of fishing rather than fighting all day with your reel and your line. Make sure that your reel is in proper working order, that you are using the recommended line size and that your reel is properly filled will all combine to make a great day of fishing.

When you are deciding on which type of reel is right for you, doing the proper research is the best thing you could do. There are many manufacturers out on the market today, some of Penn’s most popular reels include Penn 975 Reel and the Penn 209.

Conventional reels are very similar to bait casting models in a variety of ways, but the differences between the two are what fishermen use to pick between them when fishing freshwater or saltwater. The two are very different from spinning reels, but are nearly the same when compared against each other. Some novices wonder if it is even possible to tell the difference between them. While some can be used primarily for either application, most non-spinning reels were meant in an either/or capacity: either vertical or cast.

You should start by learning how they’re the same. Each has a spool axis that is perpendicular to the rod that it is mounted to. A spool is designed to spin when you cast or release the line. This is so the line is released smoothly, because the spool is what releases the line. On a spinning reel, the axis runs parallel to its rod, and holds the line still during your cast. The line is released in loop fashion before it even hits that first guide.

The crank handles on both convention and bait-casting reels are crank style – this allows for easy use whether you are a left-handed or right-handed fisherman. The level-wind feature (handy on all rods) runs up the front of the spool. The helps insure a smooth rewind of your wind and helps prevent knots and saves you the grief of hand-guiding the line.

Onshore bait-casting reels are designed to maximum performance. A smooth release and protection against backlash are two major performance enhancing features. Bait-casting reels designed for saltwater include models like AVET’s SX, the Calcutta (Shimano), C3 by Abu Garcia, and the Saltiga Surf (by Daiwa). Backlash can cause a serious disruption in your fishing trip – it’s caused from your bait (or lure) hitting the water and coming to a sudden stop. What happens from here is a nightmare – your spool is spinning out of control, with no pull directing it. This causes it to wind back over the spool and create a mess that is often easier to cut out than work out. Ask any new angler using a bait-caster if they’ve ever had this experience, as it’s one they don’t soon forget!

The Charter Special (Shimano), Sealine (Daiwa), and, the friend of every fisherman, the 114 and/or 113 by Penn are conventional reels. These are often better suited to dragging fish in. these reels boast in-line alignment which helps ensure that while you’re reeling in the catch of the day, you’re not placing undue stress on your valuable fishing gear. Most fishermen feel that these reels are less work and far more comfortable. They also have the added benefit of being ideal for trolling, three-ways and also for jigs.

There are surely a wide variety of reels on the market, so of the other popular Penn Reels include: Penn 975 and Penn 209.

Being outside means getting dirt on your hands, roughing it, and being happy no matter what weather comes your way, right? This does not have to be true, although you can head out for a long trip without even preparing. However, how easy is it to focus on catching fish when freezing water is dribbling down your neck? Being prepared for fluctuating weather means dressing for comfort and success.

Those who live in the Northeast know the saying if you don’t like the weather wait a minute and it will change. While this might be a catchy phrase, if it does change dramatically (and even the most seasoned outdoor lover will admit 30 degrees is dramatic) you want to be prepared. Whether you are venturing out on what appears to be a relatively comfortable spring or summer morning or a relatively warm fall or winter morning, change happens fast. The best thing you can do to stay comfortable regardless of the weather is to dress in layers. Layers allow you to add or remove clothing depending on the time of day and other factors.

Summer mornings can be cool, even when the early morning news is predicting temperatures reaching ninety. Many fishermen dress in a comfortable flannel shirt layered over a flimsy t-shirt when they leave at 5AM, anticipating these warmer temperatures. However, when they are on the water cruising along, they will quickly chill. Stash a windbreaker or light jacket to the mix and you will be comfortably warm. Those who fish at night face the opposite problem. It’s nice and warm when they leave the dock, but temperatures quickly drop and that t-shirt becomes less comfortable by the minute.

Light jackets and windbreakers are smart because they are lightweight and easy to stow. They do not take up much room, and can easily be stuffed in to a corner, backpack, tackle box, or even cooler. As the sun goes down, the temperatures follow suit, and you will soon be glad for that light jacket to seal out the cold and seal in your body heat. Rain jackets often are dual-purpose, with the ability to protect you from water (spray and drizzle) and break the cool wind, too. If you utilize a light jacket, make sure that buttons or snaps protect the zipper, since zippers tend to leak when they get wet.

It is critical to stay warm in the cooler months. However, as you row or get worked up fishing, you start to get hot while bundled up snugly. Anyone who has had to shovel a path in 30-degree weather knows this dilemma well. You bundle up against the elements, get worked up shoveling, and find yourself hot and sweaty quickly. The wind hits the sweat, and you are suddenly freezing again. Winter sweating can be miserable, so keep the sweating minimal by expending as little energy as possible and dressing in layers. Remove a layer or two to cut down on the perspiration, but still stay warm enough. Once you start feeling cold again, add layers back on one at a time and sit back and enjoy the comfort.

If you love fishing, chances are that you’re going to encounter all manner of weather. Dress accordingly in layers that are designed to keep you comfortable no matter what the temperature is and how you as an individual react to it. Remember, you are fishing for fun, but you also want an advantage when you can find one – staying comfortable and dry will help you get an edge when fishing – as it doesn’t focus your attention to how you feel.

Clothing is not the only important thing to consider, you should also consider your fishing supplies. Some of the most popular fishing equipment is Penn Fishing Reels including Penn International 975 and Penn 209.
