There is little worse for a fisherman than arriving at your special fishing spot and realizing that your much-loved reel badly needs repair or maintenance. Although reel repair and maintenance should usually be left to the experts, you can do it yourself if you are prepared to take the proper precautions. Keep in mind that someone who comprehends the workings of a reel should preferably undertake this kind of work, since it takes a lot of caution and care!

Preparation

How the project is begun is one of the most critical steps to any job that requires care, so you should prepare accordingly. Set aside a workspace that is suitable for the job, and make sure you leave plenty of elbowroom. Make sure that there is space for all of the delicate reel parts. It’s smart to add a detailed photo of the reel piece-by-piece so that it can be put back together after the maintenance/repair is complete, or utilize a hand-drawn diagram.

Take it apart

Nearly all reels come apart in the same manner, since they are put together in a comparable way (although some reels may vary somewhat). This step is the most imperative time to photograph or map each section as it is removed, so that you can assure that you will be able reassemble the reel later. Make sure that you cautiously detach each piece and place it in some type of order (or bag in a labeled Ziploc bag). Be sure to be particularly careful with very tiny pieces, like screws, springs, and like objects. Each piece has a valuable purpose, and every one has a specific place in your reel.

The Tools

Repair and maintenance tools are some of the fundamental elements to the success of the project. Before starting the project, make sure that you have what you need, so that you do not have to go hunting for something in the middle of the project. Necessary tools usually include (but are not limited to) screwdrivers in various sizes (Philips and flathead), pliers, ratchets (including heads), clean and absorbent rags, reel grease and reel oil. You will also need a small brush, such as a clean toothbrush. Make sure that the reel grease and reel oil are in closed containers to prevent messy spills.

Starting The Disassembly

If you proceed to take your reel apart in a controlled, graduated manner, you’ll find that your level of success will be far greater. The first step involves taking the reel apart and taking care of the maintenance and cleaning of the reel case. This step is fairly simple but must be followed exactly. There’s a nut that holds your reel handle in place – locate that nut and carefully remove it. Using a counterclockwise motion, turn your drag star, remove it and set it aside. Using great caution, remove the side place which is generally held in with four screws. You’ll have to have the right side of your reel facing you to accomplish this step. Once you’ve separated the main gear assembly, you’ll see your spool in the reel case, which you should remove.

Now that your reel case is completely empty this is the best time to carefully clean it. Remove any sand, dirt and old grease from it using a soft, absorbent cloth. After you have thoroughly cleaned it you will want to make sure that you grease the entire mechanism to ensure smooth operation. If your reel has a worm gear, make sure that you get to the drive for the level wind – inside the left plate – and turn that to help ensure that the grease is spread thoroughly. After doing this use a very small amount of grease on all teeth, clean the spool and then carefully oil the end pins. After this is complete you should replace the spool inside your reel case.

Main Drive Gear Assembly

This is perhaps one of the most critical parts of your cleaning and maintenance routine. Failure to follow these steps could result in problems down the line. Make sure to carefully remove the screws that join your main gear assembly. Some of these will be attached to a mounting plate while others will be able to simply be lifted out. Once you have freed the main gear assembly remove any old grease, dirt and sand from the gear assembly. Make sure that you are removing all old soil for best results. Once you’ve completed the cleaning, thoroughly grease the gear assembly.

The next portion of your cleaning and maintenance will involve the main drive gear assembly. Each step must be followed precisely to avoid problems.

The small parts

The main gear has washers within the top. After taking them apart, you can photograph or map the placement of every one. Then resume with the cleaning. Cleanse each washer with a cloth. Lubricate, being careful to manipulate the clean grease into each washer. Get rid of leftover grease with a clean rag. Finally, when the washers are totally dry, you should return them in the correct sequence.

Locked bearings can be a huge setback for some reels, so be sure to carefully lubricate every bearing down all sides or swap the bearing. Do not try to take the bearing apart, or you will end up cleaning BBs from your workplace!

Putting it all together

You start by positioning the spool back in the reel casing. Set the right side plate and gear assembly above the endpin. Align the screw holes, watching that each side is lined up correctly. Attach each screw into the side plate. Reattach the drag star. Next, you should attach your reel’s handle.

Testing

Using your photos or diagrams, make sure that each part is back where it originally came from. Test your work by making sure the reel is well anchored together.

Summary

Though the process is monotonous and slow, you have the ability to execute these simple maintenance steps and save money. Nevertheless, a calm hand is required, and you may discover that either a magnifying lens or excellent eyesight is very advantageous. No matter what kind of reel you are operating (conventional or bait-casting), these straightforward steps can help you steer clear of waiting for and paying a professional to keep your reel operating efficiently. Since you are probably one of the many fishermen who are finicky about who handles their reels, simply utilizing methods such as these can help put a stop to mistakes and/or repair costs. Keep your reel safe and clean, and you will nearly promise long life and many fishing memories.

There are many great reels out on the market, some of the most popular include: Shimano Fishing Reels and Penn Reels.

You will find very few east coast fishermen who do not take pleasure in fishing for fluke. Flounder, a breed of flat fish also known as “fluke” with a personality never to be forgotten, are a first-class catch for fishermen. Proficient at hiding, they are so speedy and crafty that they are quite often mistaken for shadows. These delicious white fish are not tasty but also incredible fighters, giving rise to an extraordinary fishing experience.

In the northeastern part of the United States, you can find fluke near the shoreline, usually around the month of May. Put simply, the warmer the water is, the greater the likelihood that you can find them. They normally cruise for their favorite foods when the water is warm, and enjoy foods like sand eels, squid and other baitfish. You can usually find them easily in shallow beach waters, bays and tidal river mouths. When summer is at its peak, you can haul them in between 30 and 120 feet from the shoreline, as they like to stay in water that is comfortably warm but where food is also readily available. When the temperature is cool, you have a chance to catch them even closer to the shoreline, and in the later fall months it is easiest to catch them during their annual trip toward the warmer Atlantic coastal waters. Fluke are not keen on the harsh winters of the northeast.

Every fisherman varies their approach to fluke fishing. Much of this is dependent on water depth. Shallow water fishing (early season and late season) will allow you to start close to the beach in depths as low as 20 feet (or less). Conventional tackle or a spinning rod can be used. Jigs can be tipped with squid and the bet ones are usually in the one to four ounce range. You can deploy these rigs straight down from your boat (which should be drifting). If your jig is not heavy enough it will not come in contact with the waterbed where fluke are feeding. A jig that is of the proper weight to sink to the bottom will ensure that you have a successful fishing trip.

Working your jig is critical – you can do this by raising and lowering it as your boat is drifting. Your best bet is to raise it between one and two feet from the bottom of the waterbed by lifting just the tip of the rod about two feet. The simply lower the jig slowly to attract the most attention.

If this method fails, you may decide to utilize the snap method, which is most useful when managing a school of lazy fish, seeing as it grabs their attention. The snap method is very easy for you to use: just let the line reach the bottom of the waterbed then snap it back. Let the line go limp, and this motion will catch the attention of even the laziest fluke.

Once you’ve found and caught a fluke, make note of where you are and what equipment was used successfully. Triangulation is an effectual means of pinpointing your location, but using a GPS system is the simplest method of notating the site. Keep in mind that GPS systems are also nearly indispensable when first trying to find the school of fluke.

Once the season starts to heat up, fluke will start wandering away from the shore line. In this instance, you’ll want to switch over to target fishing. This will require spinner rigs which are fun to design or you can but them in any good bait and tackle shop. Most people find that they would rather experiment with a number of different pre-made spinners until they find their preference. Once they find what they prefer, most fishermen want to make their own spinner rigs.

If you want to make the most of your spinners, beads and a spinner blade are positioned above the hook. Your preferred types of bait and sinkers help guarantee that your line will drift in proximity to the waterbed and form a visual queue as the boat drifts by rotating the spinner blade ahead of the hook. It also creates a tremor that will attract the fluke’s attention.

On trips that you are trying to catch a larger number of fluke, it’s smart to utilize a mixture of techniques. Deeper water rigs can be helpful as the fluke migrate to the cooler waters later in the season. These rigs can allow you to catch fluke easily and quickly. Following these brief and easy tips can assure that you will at least know how to catch those tasty fluke.

For you who are bored with winter weather and ready to begin fishing, ice fishing is usually a good possibility. New England residents have a host of opportunities almost literally right outside the back door. Fishermen can catch striped bass as early as March, and April brings the chance to fish for fluke (also called winter flounder). Bass and fluke are more plentiful this time of year because they reproduce alongside the coastline.

Modern restrictions have newly been placed on winter flounder owing in large part to over-harvesting and incompatible reproduction habitats. These restrictions have shortened winter flounder season to just 6 or 8 weeks, but this still offers plenty of time for a great winter fluke season.

Not like summer flounder, even if you are an inexperienced fisherman you can fish for winter flounder with comparatively light line (needing just 8-12 lbs) and a rod as short as 6-7 feet. However, you have to take into account that these fish weigh 2-3 pounds per fish. Creating a winter flounder rig does not have to be hard, but this depends on your own unique tastes. In any case, it is nearly impossible to fail provided that you take advantage of smaller hooks, which are a very important part of fishing for winter flounder. These small hooks and weights are necessary to deposit bait at the bottom and are flexible for reaching both the winter flounder’s habitat and their small and practically toothless mouths.

Bait for winter flounder should be combined with yellow grubs or beads attached to the shank. Winter flounder rigs are renowned for their bright yellow bait. Whether you elect to use mussel, sandworms or bloodworms, the bright yellow will help attract winter flounder.

Chumming is another successful means of fishing for fluke, whether you opt to fish while anchored in a boat or from the shoreline, and this method attracts large schools of winter flounder. To have all the equipment you need to take full advantage of your winter flounder fishing event, just pick up your chum pots at a local bait and tackle shop. You need simply attach the pots to a nonflexible object near the shoreline or secure them to the boat.

If you’d rather cast two or more rods at the same time, you can do so behind the boat, one in the same direction as the current is flowing and the other alongside the boat by the chum pot. This is a very efficient way for you to maximize your day’s catch and the equipment used, a plus for any fisherman.

Since winter flounder tend to congregate in areas where they can find plenty of food, chances are good that you’ll find them in fairly shallow water. The more shallow the water, the warmer it is and the more food that will be found. If you’re near an area of sand and gravel that turns to mud regularly, you are sure to find a school of winter flounder nearby.

Fishing for winter flounder is an extraordinary way for you to enjoy fishing during the long and bitter winter months, especially for saltwater fishermen. These palate-pleasing fish are also an exceptional means of restocking your freezer between fishing seasons.

When fishing for winter flounder you want to make sure that you have the proper equipment, some products to consider are Shimano Fishing Reels and Penn Fishing Reels
